Celebrating Canada Day: More Than Just Fireworks!

By Fundamentals First

Every July 1st, something magical happens across the country.

Red and white take over. Fireworks light up the night sky. People break out the BBQs, maple leaf T-shirts, and maybe even a spontaneous game of street hockey. 🇨🇦

It’s Canada Day — the ultimate birthday bash for our beautiful country!

So, What Is Canada Day?

Canada Day marks the anniversary of July 1, 1867 — the day three separate colonies (Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia) came together to form one country: the Dominion of Canada. It’s basically Canada’s “Founding Day,” and since then, we’ve grown into a country of over 38 million people, representing countless cultures, languages, and traditions.

From Tim Hortons to totem poles, and poutine to Punjabi dance crews — Canada is a blend of old and new, Indigenous roots and immigrant dreams, nature and innovation.

And that’s something worth celebrating.

What Makes Canada Day Special?

Let’s be real: it’s more than just sparklers and face paint.

It’s a day to reflect on how far we’ve come and where we’re going.

It’s a day to celebrate diversity — from coast to coast to coast, we speak different languages, eat different foods, and share stories from all over the world.

It’s a day to appreciate the land we live on — vast forests, towering mountains, peaceful lakes, and bustling cities.

How We Celebrate (Hint: It’s Not Just Fireworks)

Every family does Canada Day a little differently. Some go to parades and concerts. Others have picnics, watch fireworks, or head to the beach.

Here are some fun ways to celebrate:

  • Wear red and white (bonus points for maple leaf tattoos!)
  • Learn a new Canadian fact — did you know Winnie the Pooh was inspired by a real Canadian bear?
  • Eat “Canadian” food — like beavertails, butter tarts, or a classic plate of poutine.
  • Say thank you to someone who makes Canada a better place (maybe a neighbour, teacher, or newcomer!)

A Moment for Gratitude and Growth

While we celebrate, it’s also important to remember that Canada’s story is still being written. Part of Canada Day is recognizing Indigenous Peoples, their history, and their contributions — while also acknowledging the work we still need to do for truth and reconciliation.

Canada Day is about joy, yes — but also about listening, learning, and growing together.

From Our Team at Fundamentals First…

We love Canada for the same reason we love teaching: it’s full of potential. It’s a place where curiosity is encouraged, where mistakes are part of the journey, and where everyone deserves a chance to learn and shine.

So this Canada Day, whether you’re waving a flag, eating maple cookies, or curled up with a good book — celebrate in your own way.

Because that’s what makes Canada strong: freedom to be yourself.

Happy Canada Day, everyone! 🍁
Here’s to learning, growing, and celebrating together.
